Dissertation

"Paper Trails to the Altar: The Impact of U.S. Immigration Policies on Asian Migrants' Intimate Relationships"

This dissertation examines how U.S. immigration policies shape Asian migrants' intimate relationships and family formation processes. Drawing on 90 in-depth interviews with Asian migrants, their intimate partners, and community stakeholders, this study looks at how marriage functions simultaneously as a personal commitment and a pathway to legalization across different social locations, revealing how structural power operates within intimate aspects of everyday life. Comparing two sanctuary cities—New York City and Seattle—with contrasting enforcement realities, the dissertation shows how local implementation of federal policies produces starkly different everyday experiences across divergent local contexts, offering insights relevant to understanding large-scale policy implementation more broadly.
